SxS: Currie rule his class and Uribe among the South Americans


One of the new faces that the Dakar will have is Casey Currie, an American who knows the necessary steps to make to reach his great sporting goal in January 2019. The South Racing driver got an important victory in the Dakar Series on peruvian soil and takes a firm step towards his goal.

Among the UTV Open class, Juan Carlos Uribe made a solid performance to stay with the best stages times in the three days of competition, where he showed that he feels comfortable in these terrain types.

Truck: Mission accomplished for Hernán García

The only Peruvian pilot to live up to the Truck category, he faced the three days of the harsh dunes in the desert of Ica in the category of greatest bearing, and he took important conclusions of this experience that meant the Mitusbishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018.

Cars: Terranova and Weber, the owners of the triumph in Ica


The three stages represented a great challenge for the competitors, but among the Autos, the task was complex. However, both the Argentine Orlando Terranova (T1.1) and the Peruvian Diego Weber (T1.2), had the skill to arrive at the end of the race with the victory in their respective classes.

The Argentine returned to action with his John Mini Cooper X-Raid after several months out of business. The objective was to train for the Dakar 2019 and the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca, it was the best moment to return to the activity with a triumph that leaves good feelings for the great goal: the Dakar 100% Peru.

The multiple champion of the Peruvian rally Weber, was another of those who took advantage of the competition and dreams of a near future as a protagonist in the next edition of the most extreme race in the world.

Final Moto: Paulo Goncalves, the Ica Desert fox


The end of stage 3 was uncertain because only 21 seconds separated the first four riders at the start of the morning, which anticipated a fantastic fight for victory. But the experience and the good moment that has been going through, made it possible for Paulo Goncalves to take the deserved triumph of the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018 in Motos.

The perseverance of the Monster Energy Honda Racing rider is paying off. On saturday he ended the day at only 21 seconds behind Andrew Short when he was leading the general. But the Portuguese pushed on the last day and won his second Dakar Series of the year, considering his last victory in the Desafío Ruta 40 Dakar Series just two weeks ago.

The second place was for the austrian Matthias Walkner of the Red Bull KTM Factory and the american Short, completed the podium with his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory.

“We had a very important test here for the next Dakar. We came wanting to do everything well, to try to find the rhythm in the dunes and see how the bike goes and honestly it has come out quite well. I had a difficult starting position but my teammate Kevin Benavides did an excellent job opening the track, and I had to keep track and pull hard so that the others did not discount me a lot but in the end it went well, better than I expected, and It has helped to win the race. The idea is not to climb on anything even because the goal is long and we want to get to January in good shape. “

“The race was very competitive, we had almost all the Dakar favorites and all the official teams here and that made the competitive pace very high. Anyone could win. I had to stay with the first place, but be careful, calmly, because there is still work for what is coming. “

Final Quads: “Chavo” Salvatierra the owner of the categorie triumph


Remarkable triumph for Juan Carlos Salvatierra among the Quads, who knew how to obtain an important victory in his second race in this new category for him.

The Bolivian rider, who used to ride in Moto till last Dakar, had in the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018 his second in his Barren Racer One. However, he showed the great potential of the quad and won the three stages and the race.

The podium was completed by local riders Ignacio Flores and Emilio Chuy.

698 km of competition have passed in the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018, and none of the competitors had guarantee the victory. With some variations on the race route compared to the first day, and a delayed start due to the weather conditions, the race closed its second chapter with an open finish. 

Benavides won the stage in Moto, but Andrew Short is the leader in the overall. Only 21 seconds separate the first four riders with 180 only km of special stage remaining and nothing is defined.

The argentine Kevin Benavides, after his premature abandonment in the Desafío Ruta 40 for a head concussion two weeks ago, returned to the action in the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018 and obtained the best time between the two specials on Saturday. Andrew Short from the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Racing, became the new leader of the race.

With a total time of 3h 55m 21s, the Monster Energy Honda Team rider managed to keep the best time of the day, followed by Red Bull KTM Racing’s Matthias Walkner at only 54s, and Paulo Goncalves in third position at 2m 55s.

In the overall classification, the american former Motocross rider, is the new leader of the race ahead of Walkner by 11.2s. The third place was for the team mate of the leader Pablo Quintanilla at 14.2s. Goncalves is 4th in overall standings at only 21.2s, a minimum difference for the closing of the race that will surely offer a tight definition.

Among the Promotional Motos, Ian Salazar keeps a great rhythm.

Quads: Salvatierra stretches his advantage

Juan Carlos Salvatierra consolidated his work among the Quads, after finishing another interesting performance. The bolivian rider showed a good job with his Barren Racer One by extending his lead in the general standings over his colleagues Ignacio Flores and Emilio Choy.

The stage was for Salvatierra after 4h 51m 13s. The second was for Nicolás Cavigliasso at 8m 27s and third, Ignacio Flores at 9m 20s.

Cars: Terranova and Webber near the target

The argentine Orlando Terranova had a good day and retains the preferential position among the cars T1.2 with diesel engine. Keeping the pace was his goal, after staying out of his Mini X-Raid since the end of the Dakar 2018.

In the T1.1, the peruvian Diego Webber is shaping up as a firm candidate to stay with his class.

SxS: Casey Currie remains as the leader

The North American continues to lead the SxS category with a Can Am Maverick enlisted by South Racing after performing an interesting race on Saturday’s stage. He is escorted by his teammates Reinaldo Varela at 54m 31s and Cristian Baumgart at 54m 54s.

Finally, the action has return in Ica Desert with the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca. With 338 kilometres full of emotions, the race completed the first day having Toby Price leading in Moto’s category, Orlando Terranova in Cars, Juan Carlos “Chavo” Salvatierra in Quads and Juan Carlos Uribe in SxS.

Price at the front for the beginning

The Australian pilot of Red Bull KTM Racing Factory, give the first blow in the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018. With his KTM 450, he took the best time on Friday between the Motorcycles, marking a time of 4h 10m 19s after completing the 338 KM.

In second place finished Adrien Van Beveren from the Yamaha Yamalube Racing. With his Yamaha 450 he ended at 2m 1s 30 from Price. The third place was for the Chilean Ignacio Cornejo from the Monster Energy Honda Racing, at 2m 24s from the leader.

Quads: “Chavo” Salvatierra’s time 

The pilot Juan Carlos Salvatierra, achieved his first stage winning in the Quad category. With a Yamaha Raptor 700, the Bolivian who knew how to excel in motorcycles, changed category and in a short time, showed his best expression. With a time 5h 5m 6, he beaten the Peruvian riders Ignacio Flores, at 6m 59s and Emilio Choy, at 36m 59s, both with Yamaha Raptor as well.

Cars: Terranova gets bigger with the Mini

The Cars category was for the Argentinean Orlando Terranova. With his John Mini Cooper from the X-Raid he set the pace. The morning with Francisco León leading after the first loop. But at the end, the Mini driver improves his performance and finished the day leading the overall with a time of 5h 54m.

The local driver “Pancho” León arrived in second place with his Mitsubishi L200 Dakar and Alvaro Brandes, with a Toyota Hilux, was third at 53m 53s from Terranova.

SxS: Juan Carlos Uribe ahead in the first stage. “Chaleco” López follows closer

A great start for the local driver Juan Carlos Uribe. With his Can Am Maverick, he was able to overcome a hard stage and get the leadership after 4h 55m 11s.

A great beginning had also Francisco López in the SxS. After being absent during the last years in rally raid races in Moto, the Chilean driver was back to action in a Can Am Maverick arriving in a second position at the end of the day.

The third place was for the American Casey Currie



“We had a very good start. Some waypoints were difficult to find at the beginning. The pilots who were ahead were lost, I noticed it by the tracks, but I was lucky to find them and I had a great day. Tomorrow I have to open and I’ll start ahead, so I’ll try to make the best possible day and learn as much as possible before the rest of the pilots reach us. This is going to be a great training for the Dakar in January. “


“I am very happy to win today’s stage. More than a year and a half ago, and for various reasons, I had no results according to the training and work that has been done. Today I feel we started on the right path.”


“The race is very nice. The track is very similar to the Dakar, to what we did in the last Dakar. We had a delay because my navigator Ronnie (Graue) broke down and we had to stop; We even thought about leaving when we did the first round. 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca: A world-class rally


With just two days to go before the start of the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca, in the Ica desert, the organizers are ready to welcome the 115 competitors entered in this third edition of the Dakar Series in Peru.

Key points:
The 115 entrants in the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca come from 19 countries.
91 vehicles will be present for technical and administrative checks on September 13: 32 cars,
47 bikes, 11 quads and 1 truck.

A staff of 90 people will oversee the organisation of the rally and will have 20 vehicles at its disposal. The organisation will also have 2 helicopters for continuous monitoring of the three stages.

A staff of 250 people will look after the safety of the rally and will have 40 vehicles at its disposal positioned in the appropriate zones of the rally.

2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca a crucial milestone in the run-up to the Dakar


ASO (Amaury Sport Organisation) has been running the Dakar Series rally-raid competition for 10 years to promote the Dakar brand and help to forge new adventurers. Spectacular racing, safety, protecting the environment and safeguarding the archaeological heritage are the key ingredients.

Jean-Marc Aublanc Piolot, coordinator of the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca, said: “We’ve been running this season-long series of events for about ten years. We have three this year: one in Morocco (Afriquia Merzouga Rally), another in Argentina (YPF Desafío Ruta 40) in August, and yet another one in Peru in September. 

The organisation works hand-in-hand with the government authorities responsible for protecting the environment and safeguarding the archaeological heritage. Each part of the route is agreed upon with the local authorities, who know every nook and cranny of it. “The Organisation always works closely with Peruvian authorities to ensure sensitive areas remain untouched. We have gained approval for the route and the mitigation measures that we will take during the event.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018 will be the third edition of the Dakar Series in Peru. Looking back on the 2013 and 2014 editions, Jean-Marc Aublanc-Piolot said: “These races showed the potential of Peruvian competitors for the Dakar. We really hope that the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca will match the success of previous years. New competitors have signed up along with the regulars“. Peruvian Gianna VELARDE, a fighter both on and off the bike, is one of them.

Gianna is set to become the first Peruvian woman to race in the motorbike category of the Dakar next year. However, she knows that taking part in the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca will be a key milestone in her build-up.

The young biker explains that her career “didn’t start like a fairytale”. She got into motorbiking at a difficult time in the life of her and her family, when she was diagnosed with stage 3 lymph node cancer.

The bike gave me back all the self-esteem I’d lost to 16 cycles of chemotherapy and 32 rounds of radiotherapy. Every time I climbed to the top of a hill, I felt an unknown power inside me, the conviction that I could overcome any obstacle that stands in my way“, she said about the healing power of riding a bike.

Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018: Overview


The Route of the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018 is without doubt one of the best options for competitors and teams to test themselves in the imposing dunes of the Ica desert between 13 and 16 September, getting ready to take on the 41st edition of the Dakar Rally 100% Perú. The third edition of the race will concentrate the action in a region of Peru that amazes visitors with its unsurpassable natural beauty, as well as the rich history and culture of a pre-conquest civilisation that is still alive.

In the words of Juan Valdivia

Juan Valdivia, Sporting Director of the event, tells us about this Dakar Series competition that will take place between 13 and 16 September. The route for the third edition of this race will be over terrain full of surprises and will be very demanding, both in terms of navigation and race management:

“The 3 stages will cover around 1,000 kilometres in total. The special stages will be very technical in sand dunes and the drivers and riders will find navigation difficult. The stages will be in loop format with two laps, the second containing an unexpected surprise in terms of
navigation. The event will be an excellent opportunity to prepare for the Dakar 2019 100% Peru. The magical Ica desert has been selected, with areas with a great variety of dunes: narrow passes, soft sand, enormous dunes and other obstacles that will require precise navigation to
follow the correct route; for many competitors it will be a major challenge, but not an impossible one. It is the best opportunity to work on race management and navigation and will be a hard test for the more experienced competitors, who will be in good shape to take on the 2019 Dakar Rally. As for the less experienced, we recommend them not to follow the tracks of others: try and navigate on your own account to gain experience for bigger challenges. The drivers and riders should be completely aware of the kinds of difficulties they will find: the dunes require
many hours of ‘flight time’ to master them and the Desafío Inca is the best way to do it”.

The protagonists of a new adventure
Ica is one of the most spectacular regions in the continent for staging an off-road motorsport competition. The two previous editions and the incursions into it by the Dakar Rally showed how demanding and hard it is to master the famous desert, which has left its mark on all those who
crossed it.

Luis Eguiguren was one of the first to sign up for the event. One of the representatives of the ‘Chilean armada’ in his Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca who has taken part in the most extreme race in the world as well as other rallies, he started out in the Bikes category and later changed to Cars. This time he is getting ready to compete with an SxS, as his aim is to return to the Dakar Rally in 2019 with this vehicle after being absent for the last three editions.

Based on his worldwide experience, Eguiguren says: “I have competed in rallies almost all over the world: Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, and the dunes of Peru are definitely the most technical on the planet. The Desafío Inca gives us the opportunity to prepare for the 2019 Dakar, and it is certainly worthwhile doing the 3.000 kilometres that separate us from the start line in January.”

Emiliano Fuenzalida is another competitor who hopes to shine in the Mitsubishi Motors Desafío Inca 2018. Born in Quito, Ecuador, he also holds Chilean nationality and is a cousin of the fondly-remembered Carlo De Gavardo and the Prohens brothers. Emiliano carries his
passion for off-road in his DNA. Having competed in some editions of the Dakar Rally in Quads, in the last few years he has chosen other races to compete in the Cars category.
Regarding the forthcoming race, he says: “It is a very demanding event that we have a lot of respect for, and where we can train with a view to the next objectives in the Dakar. Ica is a fascinating desert, with an impressive culture and the warmth of our Peruvian friends”.

The riches of Nature and History joined together

The Department of Ica is made up of five provinces: Chincha, Pisco, Ica, Palpa and Nazca, covering 21,371.83 km2 of the country’s surface area. It borders with Lima to the north, with the Department of Arequipa to the south, Huancavelica and Ayacucho to the east and the
immensity of the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Out to sea are the Ballestas islands, rocky formations a few kilometres off the coast of Paracas where a variety of penguins and sea lions live, among other species. The Nature Reserve of Paracas, an important area for the preservation of local flora and fauna, is also located there.
Inland are the Nazca Lines, ancient geoglyphs on the plain of Jumana that are best seen from the air. They were drawn by the people of the Nazca culture, who lived there between 200 BC and 600 AD. The different shapes they drew on the Nazca desert were declared a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The lagoon of Huacachina is another of the area’s marvels. This oasis, just a few kilometres from the city of Ica, is a mirror of green water with vegetation in the middle of a desert that is fed by underground springs.

For the more adventurous -including those who will take part in the Desafío Inca-, the Desert of Ica is fascinating ocean of sand that will delight the visitor, even those who already know it.

Great pilots and teams for a great race


With the prospect of a Dakar Rally 2019 100% in Peru, the Desafío Inca, which will take place in the Ica desert from 13 to 16 September 2018, has become an excellent alternative for many of the key figures of the rally raid worldwide, in the different disciplines.

In Bikes, important official teams had already confirmed their participation with elite competitors in the third edition of the Dakar Series in Peru: KTM Racing, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing, Yamaha Yamalube Racing, Monster Honda Racing Team and Hero Motorsport.

KTM, the two-wheel king for 17 years in the Dakar, together with Husqvarna Factory, were the last two official teams to confirm their presence in the Desafío Inca. The Austrian team will bring its dream team: the winners of the last three Dakars, Matthias Walkner (201 8), Sam Sunderland (2017) and Toby Price (201 6). Then come the Spanish rider Laia Sanz and the Argentinian Luciano Benavides, the last entry. For their part, Pablo Quintanilla (Chile) and Andrew Short (USA) will be riding for Husqvarna this season.

Honda Racing Corporation will have the Argentinian Kevin Benavides (2nd in the 2018 Dakar), the Spaniard Joan Barreda, who is returning to the dunes of Peru after his operation, and the great fighter in different battles, the Portuguese Paulo Gonçalves. To make a demanding race even more spectacular, Yamaha will have the Frenchmen Xavier de Soultrait and Adrien Van Beveren, who returns to action after his accident in the last edition of the Dakar, and the Argentinian Franco Caimi. For its part, the team from India Hero Motorsport will line up with Spain’s Oriol Mena (best Rookie of the 2018 Dakar), Joaquim Rodrigues (Portugal) and CS Santosh (India).

The host country will have representatives such as Renzo Corno and Gianna Velarde, the first Peruvians to confirm their participation. Corno will return to the tracks after his presence in the last Dakar. Velarde, who arrives from Enduro, will have her first off-road experience in the discipline in the Desafío Inca with the aim of fulfilling her great aim, the Dakar. In cars, Francisco “Pancho” de León was another local competitor to register for the race.

The event will have other key figures of Rally Raid such as the all-time winner in the history of the Dakar, Stéphane Peterhansel (France). Together with his wife Andrea Meyer, “Monsieur Dakar” will take on the dunes of Peru with an SxS Yamaha YXZ, showing his eternal fighting spirit in a category in which he will take part for the first time. Pablo Copetti (Argentina), one of the most experienced quad riders, obtained his greatest sporting success in the 2017 Dakar by finishing 3rd, and will take part in the Desafío Inca.

Gianna Velarde, first Peruvian woman at Desafío Inca


The women will also have their representatives at the Desafío Inca 2018 Dakar Series. Among them stands out Gianna Velarde, Peruvian Enduro driver, who is preparing for the Dakar 2019, its great goal.

With 24 years, Gianna Velarde has become one of the references of motorcycling in her country. With her fighting spirit, she is distinguished by her professionalism in a sport where the male is mostly represented, but also for overcoming a serious illness that touched her when she was 15 years old.

Today, she is preparing to achieve a great goal in her sporting career: to be part of the 2019 Dakar that will be 100% Peru, and the Desafío Inca is the ideal race to prepare.

Peterhansel confirms his participation in the Desafío Inca


With only two months left for the Desafío Inca starting, one of the main drivers of the rally raid is ready for been part of this new round. Stephane Peterhansel is the frst of the foreings competitors to confirm his participation at this Dakar Series race to be perform from September 13th to 16th

Monsieur  Dakar or the Desert Fox, are some of the NIK names that identified Peterhansel, the most winner driver in the Dakar. Counting his years in Moto and Auto categories, he has an outstanding record of 13 victories in total.

The Desafío Inca third edition (2013 and 2014 were the previous), will have with Peterhansel one of the most important drivers that will thrill in the Peruvian desert, but this time with a Yamaha YXZ SxS next to his wife Andrea Mayer as copilot.

“Pancho” León prepares to animate the Inca Challenge


Francisco León is one of the first confirmations to participate in the Cars category in the Desafío Inca 2018 from September 14 to 16.


Great connoisseur of the rich geography of his country, “Pancho” León, confirmed that it will be part of the third edition of the Desafio Inca Dakar Series that will have Ica as its epicenter.

The pilot born in Lima, who is dedicated to organize trips in Peruvian desert and organize cross country competitions with his well-known firm Alta Ruta 4×4, has in his record four participations in the Dakar with important results as the 2nd place in T1.2 in 2012 or the triumph in the T3 category in 2015. In addition, in the first edition of the Inca Challenge in 2013, it reached the 2nd place in the general ranking of T1.2.

Undoubtedly, he will seek to consolidate in this third Dakar Series to be held in Peru, prelude to the 41st edition of the Dakar that will have this country as the exclusive host of the most extreme race in the world.

Concocted for “top competitors” to continue their preparation but also for amateurs who want to experience the “Dakar spirit”, the 3rd edition of the Dakar Series Desafío Inca will be held from September 14-16 in Peru, which will also host the next edition of the Dakar. A Golden opportunity to toughen up and contribute to the emergence of new competitors in a country that adores rally-raid.

The countdown has begun. In less than eight months, next January, hundreds of competitors will start edition 41 of the Dakar that will be a ten-stage rally in the heart of Peru. Several competitors will participate in the Dakar Series Desafío Inca in September to fine-tune their preparation and get some valuable time in the dunes, and sandy Peruvian sectors.

Ideal conditions and extraordinary panoramic views
The three-stage race will be an opportunity for the “top competitors” to fine-tune their set-ups on their machines and  get acclimated to the conditions they will face on the Dakar. In addition to the extraordinary panoramic views – the Dakar Series Desafío Inca will be held in the Ica region, which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean – the competitors and assistance teams will benefit from a stationary bivouac, which will offer them an ideal setting for multiple exchanges
and completing their preparation.

Alongside the “top competitors”, amateurs from the five Dakar categories (car, motorcycle, quad, Side by Side and truck) will get a chance to experience “the Dakar spirit”. An initiation held in the best possible conditions. The Dakar organiser will offer its experience in terms of organisation, logistics as well as constant support to these competitors.

Following in the paths of Hernández and Fuchs
The third running of the Dakar Series Desafío Inca (after the 2013 and 2014 editions) will be the final Dakar Series event after the Afriquia Merzouga Rally, held in Morocco last April and the Desafío Ruta 40 that will be contested in Argentina from August 25-31. Prior to the 2019 Dakar, which will be run exclusively in Peru, the Dakar Series Desafío Inca has what it needs to seduce the numerous Peruvian competitors who also aspire to compete in the toughest rally-raid in the world. Like their compatriots, quad rider Alexis Hernández, who finished 5th last time out on the Dakar and rally driver Nicolás Fuchs who is a regular in WRC2 and who finished 12th in his first participation in the Dakar, there are many who want to represent the Peruvian colours.

The Desafío Inca Dakar Series 2018 is back!


The Desafío Inca Dakar Series is back in Peru for its  3rd edition in September 2018. With only a few months left until the 100% Peruvian Dakar 2019, the Desafio Inca will become a strategic rendezvous.


The 100% Peruvian Dakar 2019 promises a dense and demanding program to all the pilots during 10 stages. The competitors will have to face a demanding sandy desert, which is the essence of the rally-raid. Those who competed to the 2018 edition will confirm the complexity of crossing through the dunes during the rally. The Dakar Series Desafío Inca will be an opportunity to test both: your vehicles and your capacities during the demanding conditions of the race. 

The Ica area will give to the participants 3 race days, special loop stages, a spectacular panorama and an intense simulation of what is going to be in the Dakar 2019. The race will take place between the 14th  and the 16th of September 2018 with one scrutineering day on the September the 13t of 2018. The registrations will open on June, the 4th of 2018.

KTM Factory Racing is coming in hot to Desafío Inca


For the third year in the row, Peru will organize one of the most important races of the year worldwide: Desafio Inca. Pilots from all around the world will come to Peruvian territories with one aim: to dominate the sculpted dunes of Ica.

That’s the reason why KTM Factory Racing has confirmed 2 pilots to win this edition. That ’s the case of Laia Sanz, one of the most important women riders in the world, the woman who has done the best ranking in the history of Rally Dakar (9th in 2015) and 16 times world champion (13 in trial and 6 in enduro). They are also coming with Jordi Viladoms who finished 2nd in the 2014 edition of the Dakar.

Another rider who will come to Desafio Inca is Toby Price under the team Husqvarna. Toby finished 3rd, on his first participation, on the last edition of the Rally Dakar.



The Desafío Inca will be held in Peru from September 11-13 and the leaders are beginning to make themselves known. Yamaha Motor Europe is entering Hélder Rodrigues on this round of the Dakar Series. The Portuguese rider will be joined by Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren.

The two previous editions of the Desafío Inca in Peru have convinced riders that this event is the ideal way to prepare for the Dakar. Yamaha got the message and has entered two riders for the third and final round of the 2015 Dakar Series that will be run from September 11-13 in Peru (the official presentation will be held on July 9, 2015).

Hélder Rodrigues, who returns to Yamaha this year, will be joined by young French rider Adrien Van Beveren, who will be entered in the Dakar Challenge category. An interesting association between the experienced 36-year old Portuguese rally-raider, who won the 2011 Cross Country Rallies World Championship, has two overall top-three results on the Dakar (from 9 participations), seven stage victories (including three with Yamaha) and that of a young moto-cross rider who is a sand specialist and twice winner of the Enduropale du Touquet. Van Beveren is also well-known in South America after winning the Del Verano Enduro sand race in Argentina.

Helder Rodrigues has been on form this year aboard the Yamaha 450 WRF, winning the Tunisia Rally and taking a podium result in Sardinia. No doubt he will arrive in Peru with ambitious goals. Adrien Van Beveren will be aiming for victory in the Dakar Challenge category, which would see him win his entry for the 2016 Dakar.

Desafio Inca 2015: “Chavo” ready to return


Bolivian rider Juan-Carlos Salvatierra is preparing his return with hard work. To battle with the best on the next Dakar, he has chosen to enter the Peruvian round of the Dakar Series in September.

The Dakar is never unfair, but sometimes cruel. There was something out of place when running into Juan Carlos Salvatierra at the Uyuni bivouac after Salvatierra had been congratulated by President Evo Morales for his courage and perseverance, following his retirement from the rally two days earlier with a broken left hand. The most emblematic Bolivian competitor in the Dakar, who still pursues his objective of a top ten finish after his 14th place in 2014, has since accumulated pain and bitterness.

Determined to come back to mix it up with the elite, “Chavo” has selected the Desafío Inca to complete his preparation, at the end of a clear and targeted time of reflexion: “next January, the Dakar will begin in Peru with demanding stages. And I remember that the dunes are quite technical there. There will be no better place to train and to position myself in the best conditions to start the rally. Also, this corresponds ideally with my racing schedule”. And when it comes to the calendar, the Bolivian rider has put in some encouraging results with a 7th place in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, then 2nd place on the Pharaons Rally.

Desafío Inca: the school of dunes


Registration is now open for edition three of the Desafío Inca on September 11-13, a tactical meeting just a few months prior to the Dakar…

 The return of the Dakar to Peru promises a dense and demanding programme in the opening days of the rally in 2016… with a substantial ration of sand. Those who competed on the Peruvian stages in the 2012 and 2013 will confirm: the dunes are tall, they go on forever and the sand is soft!  Everything comes together for the climbing experts, who will be the most at home in these sectors. With this in mind, the Desafío Inca stages appear to be an opportune occasion to test both the vehicle and one’s sensations in proper race conditions, not too long before the Dakar challenge. Over three days of racing, the Inca Desert will be explored via three two-lap loop stages.

While the Desafío Inca is presented as a major test ahead of the Dakar, training sessions and navigation courses will be provided. It is also the final round of the Dakar Series, where the title will be decided, rewarding the winner of the accumulated general classification with results obtained on the Desafío Ruta 40 and Desafío Guaraní. The Dakar Challenge, for the youngest competitors (in any case the least experienced in the top echelon of rally-raid) will also be up for grabs. The eventual winner will win a free entry for the 2016 Dakar, which is a particularly coveted prize.

The Dakar Series has become the way to go in preparing for the Dakar. This year, the Desafío Ruta 40, Desafío Guaraní and Desafio Inca will once again be the scene of some world-class competition between the top South American racers.

Determined and focused on their objectives, the Dakar competitors also standout by their ability to regroup towards their next challenges. After the joys or disappointments of the 2015 edition, it is now time to prepare for the next challenge, which for many involves a confrontation on intermediate events, beginning with the two rounds of the Dakar Series that will be part of the program during 2015. First up will be Argentina with the Desafío Ruta 40 inMay where the protagonists of next year’s Dakar will be in action. A few weeks later, the second edition of the Desafío Guaraní will be held in Paraguay with significantly different terrain that will offer the variety that is so characteristic of the Dakar. Lastly, to prepare for the Dakar’s return to Peru, the sandiest round of the Dakar Series will be organised in the Ica desert, four months before the launch of the rally.

The titles up for grabs in the bike, quad and car categories are now proper goals that the big names in the sport thrive to achieve. Making matters even more interesting is the combined classification of the three events, in which a trophy will be rewarded to the Dakar Series champions, as well as a free entry for the 2016 Dakar.

Kings of Peru: Nani Roma, Claudio Rodríguez and Alonso Elías are the winners of the 2014 Desafío Inca


The second edition of the Desafío Inca on Peruvian soil was a massive success, with the best competitors in each of the three different categories claiming victory in a race open until the very end. Nani Roma (cars), Claudio Rodríguez (motorcycles) and Alonso Elías (quads) prevailed and took home the 2014 trophy.




Spain’s top driver Nani Roma (Mini All 4 Racing) lived up to his status as one of the big favourites on the dunes of Ica and won the second edition of the Desafío Inca, clinching his first triumph on Peruvian soil with a final time of 13 h 21′48″. He and co-driver Michel Périn did an excellent job and put on a dominant performance throughout the three stages of the final leg of the Dakar Series.

Roma led the race from start to finish, claiming all three stages and six specials at stake in this edition. It was a strong showing by the official Mini driver, who left nothing to his rivals in the three-day race. Rodrigo Moreno (+1 h 37′42″) was runner-up, with Peru’s Duro 4×4 team placing Diego Weber (+2 h 23′21″) in third place as the best Peruvian van in the race.


Ica’s just witnessed one of the tightest races of the 2014 Dakar Series. Chile’s Claudio Rodríguez (KTM 450) struck the decisive blow at the eleventh hour to win the motorcycle category, in which four different riders were still in with a shout before the last special. Rodríguez took the top honours in Peru in one of the most closely fought categories in the entire race. Claudio pulled out all the stops in the last special, clocking a final time of 13 h 00′07″ and leapfrogging José Cornejo by a puny 3″.

A deserved win for Rodríguez at the end of today’s stage, which he started in style by taking the first special, giving him the motivation he needed to dominate the rest of the day and become the worthy winner of the Peruvian event. José Cornejo (+3″) and France’s David Casteu (+4′12″) also rode strongly on the majestic Peruvian dunes and took the remaining two steps on the podium.


Young Peruvian star Alonso Elías (Yamaha Raptor 700) went down in history in his country by winning the quad race with an outstanding time of 14 h 10′50″, after he used the last special of the day to blaze past Chile’s Víctor Gallegos (+1′55″), leader of the race until the first special of the closing stage. Elías is the first Peruvian rider ever to have won a category at the Desafío Inca.

Alonso gave Peru its first champion, a big success for the young Peruvian quad rider, who showed huge potential and earned a place among the country’s rising sports stars. Rodolfo Guillioli (+34′43″) rounded off the podium.


France’s David Casteu (motorcycles) and Paraguay’s Nelson Sanabria (quads) were crowned champions of the 2014 Dakar Series thanks to their solid performances in Peru. After taking part in the Desafío Ruta40 inArgentina and the Desafío Guaraní in Paraguay, the two riders capped a great season in Ica, taking the top honours in one of the most challenging tournaments in the world, featuring the elite of rally raid and the toughest races held on the continent. Casteu successfully defended in Peru the title he conquered last year.


Cristóbal Guldman (motorcycles) and Rodolfo Guillioli (quads) were the best amateur competitors in the 2014 Desafío Inca and, after overcoming the majestic, challenging dunes around Ica, won the Dakar Challenge and the much coveted prize it entails: a ticket to the 2015 Dakar Rally. A deserved victory for the two riders, who made clear their ambition to continue shining in the future.


Claudio Rodríguez – Winner of the motorcycle classification: “This gives me the goose bumps. I’m delighted. Today’s stage was fast but very much like the previous ones. I went flat out to get a podium place and beat Felipe Ríos. We were fighting within 24 seconds, it was very close. Then I saw how strong I was going, and I’m really happy. I’d like to thank my team and my mechanics. My entire team here at the rally, my family and my sponsors.”

Alonso Elías – Winner of the quad classification: “I wasn’t expecting this. I’m very surprised. I didn’t expect to finish in the top 5. I’m happy I made it to the finish, which was my main goal, but even happier to have won. It comes as a surprise, but I think we were racing strongly from the beginning, with lots of common sense, calm and a level head. I gave it my all today.”

Nani Roma – Winner of the car classification: “We’re always happy when we win a race. I think the best part was tackling three gruelling stages with a total of over 900 kilometres raced mostly on dunes. It was very demanding, the dunes are very tough. We’re happy we won, but we were the odds-on favourites. The best part was all this training, all these tests, lots of kilometres… That was the best part, to be honest.”

The second stage of the 2014 Desafío Inca was one of the toughest held in Peru since its arrival last season. Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles) bounced back to claim his first stage this year, but it was Frenchman David Casteu who moved into the lead. Víctor Gallegos and Nani Roma scored a double whammy with the stage win and the overall lead after proving their superiority on the dunes of Paracas.



After leading the first special of the day, Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla (KTM 450 Rally Replica) overcame his mechanical problems to win stage 2 of the Desafío Inca with a dominant ride from the get-go. The South American rider posted a time of 4 h 02′40″ to beat Eduardo “Tato” Heinrich (+5′34″) and David Casteu (+9′46″) after a solid performance on the stage with the longest special (199 kilometres). Nevertheless, it was the Frenchman who moved into the overall lead.

David Casteu (KTM 450) already staked his claim to the overall lead yesterday, and today he bested previous leader José Cornejo to take the reins of the race with a time of 9 h 03′47″ and just one day to go. Cornejo remains within striking distance, though, a mere 1′18″ behind the leader. Peru continues to pin its hopes on Felipe Ríos, who’s also in the mix and will be feeling the pressure tomorrow to claw back the 3′08″ separating him from the French rider.


Chile’s Víctor Gallegos (Honda TRX 700 XX) achieved one of the most important results of the day by taking the stage with a time of 5 h 03′29″, enough to catapult him into the lead after an unlucky Ignacio Casale was forced to withdraw due to mechanical problems. Gallegos has his sights set on the Peruvian race in which he claimed last year’s Dakar Challenge.

Gallegos was 2′24″ quicker than Gastón Pando and 10′04″ faster than Rodolfo Guillioli in today’s stage, and now leads the general classification with a time of 9 h 41′03″ and 10′39″ to spare on rising star Alonso Elías. The 17-year-old followed up on yesterday’s surprisingly good ride with another solid performance today. Rodolfo Guillioli now holds the same place overall as in today’s stage, third at +15′13″.


Spain’s Nani Roma (Mini All 4 Racing) and navigator Michel Périn took their second straight win at the 2014 Desafío Inca. After triumphing in the opening stage, the official Mini driver clocked a time of 4 h 35′43″ to make it two out of two and consolidate his overall lead with a time of 9 h 09′04″.

Nani’s taking no prisoners in this year’s Desafío Inca as he grabs stage after stage on his quest for Peruvian glory. Rodrigo Moreno (+1 h 10′15″) and Diego Weber (+1 h 16′24″) rounded off today’s podium. The Mini team will settle for nothing less than victory after tomorrow’s stage.


Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles) – Stage 2 winner: “Today’s stage was long and the heat made it much harder than yesterday’s. Navigating was a bit tricky. I got lost and it cost me several minutes, but after that I settled into a good pace and had no problems finding my way around. I rode well, I felt well. At least it washed away the bitter taste left by yesterday’s stage.”

Víctor Gallegos (quads) – Stage 2 winner and leader of the quad classification: “Today went much better than yesterday. This stage was much tougher than the previous one, to be honest. I think my quad’s more suited to firmer terrain. Yesterday was too soft, with lots of fesh-fesh. I had trouble going full throttle, but today’s stage was more stop-and-go, with cut dunes. I was in my element.”

Nani Roma (cars) – Stage 2 winner and leader of the car classification: “I felt better this morning, but we had a small problem with the car which he had to check out, a strange noise inside the gearbox, and we took it a bit easier because the second gear didn’t work properly. We’ll have a look at it now, but I’m happy we made it to the finish. I started the second special very strongly and suddenly we heard a deafening noise coming from the gearbox, so we just eased up and finished in good condition.”

Nani Roma and Ignacio Casale win opener, José Cornejo springs early surprise at Desafío Inca


The opening stage of the 2014 Desafío Inca saw the big favourites rise to the top after 326 kilometres of spectacular racing on the dunes around Ica. Nani Roma (cars) and Ignacio Casale (quads) produced a stunning performance to seize the lead at the end of the first stage, while Chile’s José Cornejo (motorcycles) surprised everyone by taking the reins in his category.



The star-studded field may have driven expectations in the motorcycle category to stratospheric levels over the last few months, but it was Chile’s José Cornejo (Suzuki RMX 2) who sprang a huge surprise at the end of the Desafío Inca opener. The South American’s time of 4 h 16′24″ was enough to propel him to the top of the classification, ahead of all the big names in the category, with Claudio Rodríguez (+3′32″) and Felipe Ríos (+3′53″) rounding off today’s podium.

A fabulous start for Cornejo, who’d already shown he meant business in the last leg of this Dakar Series by posting the fastest time at the end of the first loop, whereas defending champion Pablo Quintanilla was unfortunately forced out of the race by mechanical problems.


The reigning Dakar and Desafío Inca champion, Chile’s Ignacio Casale (Yamaha Raptor 700), stormed into the lead in the quad category with another display of the skills and experience amassed over all these years. Casale posted a time of 4 h 17′56″ to steal the show in Paracas, beating Peru’s Alexis Hernández (+6′33″) and Alonso Elías (+14′34″), who at the young age of 17 rubbed elbows with the top brass and showed promise as one of the rising stars in the Dakar Series firmament.

The opening special was a titanic struggle between Casale and Uruguay’s Sergio Lafuente, which came to an unfortunate end when the defending Desafío Ruta 40 (Argentina) and Desafío Guaraní (Paraguay) champion had to withdraw due to a blow sustained during the race, leaving Ignacio to chase what would be his second Desafío Inca on Peruvian soil.


Spain’s Nani Roma (Mini All 4 Racing) was in a league of his own in the opening stage of the 2014 Desafío Inca. The Spanish driver and two-time Dakar champion made good use of all the experience accrued over the years to clock a fastest time of 4 h 33′21″ at the end of the two loops which he’d started in the early morning.

Roma’s health issues didn’t stop the two-time Dakar champion from bursting onto the scene. Nani had already opened up a sizeable gap with Michel Perin by the end of the first loop and never looked back as he charged towards the stage win.


Ignacio Casale – Stage 1 winner in quads: “It was a gruelling stage. The famous Paracas wind made the dunes extremely soft and we had trouble crossing them. Lots of motorcycles went down. I also had a small fall when I hesitated and let the motorcycle pitch up. Anyway, we had a great stage despite these problems. We were able to press on hard and ride well, and I got used to the new motorcycle. My right hand hurts a bit, but it’s perfectly tolerable.”

José Cornejo – Stage 1 winner in motorcycles:  “It was a really hard stage with lots of dunes. We rode the same loop twice, and the second time things were quite messed up, with more dust, more stones and lots of fesh-fesh, more than the first time. Navigating wasn’t too difficult today. I, at least, didn’t have to do much work because I started further back and was able to use the openers’ tracks a bit.”

Nani Roma – Stage 1 winner in cars: “This morning was somewhat difficult because I wasn’t feeling well. We knew the dunes and all the other things always make it hard to race here. It was a nice stage, no walk in the park. Some strings of dunes were difficult to cross, but anyway, my main problem was that I wasn’t feeling well this morning and had to stop four times to throw up. The first special was a horror story, but the second one went well.”



With less than one week to go until registration for the Desafío Inca closes, the drivers and riders who’ve already signed up will make up a star-studded field for the third and last leg of the 2014 Dakar Series. The start list features big names such as Spain’s Nani Roma and Chile’s Ignacio Casale (winners of the 2014 Dakar in the car and quad categories, respectively), as well as Peru’s local hero Nicolas Fuchs, ready to make his big debut in the world of rally raids!

The second edition of the Desafío Inca will be a who’s who of elite rally raids, with the leading specialists in each category going head-to-head in the Ica region from September 11 to 14. Chief among them, the big winner of the 2014 Dakar, Spain’s Nani Roma! As he gears up for his title defence as the champion of the greatest rally raid on Earth, which he fought tooth and nail for in January, exactly ten years after winning the rally on a motorcycle, the Catalan has chosen to test his Mini on the roughly 930 km long Desafío Inca, an ideal, unique opportunity to tackle a course with lots of variety and a strong flavour of sand and dunes. The Mini driver will be on the hunt for another Dakar Series triumph to go with the Desafío Ruta 40 he won in 2013, when he also took part to prepare for the Dakar

He’ll come up against the stiff opposition of rivals such as Chile’s Team Tamarugal and their sparkling-new SAM Mercedes, which have already proved their reliability and potential for several seasons with Germany’s Matthias Kahle at the wheel. More than enough to light up the car race, which will also see the rally raid debut of Peruvian motor sports star Nicolás Fuchs. The 31-year-old driver from Lima, who took the production category WRC 2 World Championship in 2013, has already shown his ability to adapt and spring a surprise or two, or even become the kingmaker of the category.

The quad race should also go down to the wire, with defending champion and 2014 Dakar winner Ignacio Casale as the man to beat. He’s back at a race which, in his own words, gave him the confidence he needed to finish on the top step of the podium in Valparaíso last January. The Chilean rider has no doubt set his sights on a repeat win. Some of his great rivals, all of them Dakar stage winners, will be out to thwart him, including Uruguay’s Sergio Lafuente, Argentina’s Sebastián Halpern, Chile’s Víctor Manuel Gallegos and the other crowd favourite, Peru’s Ignacio Flores. Another home boy, Alexis Hernández, will also strive to please his fans.

Eduardo “Tato” Heinrich and Felipe Ríos will fly the Peruvian colours in what is yet another star-studded field, including “official” riders like Olivier Pain and Javier Pizzolito. The Frenchman and the Argentinean, ready to test themselves and fine-tune their preparations for the Dakar, are clear favourites to win the last leg of the 2014 Dakar Series, which will also decide whether Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla or France’s David Casteu takes home the 2014 Dakar Series overall title.

The stellar cast in all categories could still pick up a few other big names and last-minute surprises before registration closes at midnight on September 1.

Ignacio Casale: “Desafíos are learning experiences for the Dakar”


Chilean driver Ignacio Casale got his master in the 2013 Desafío Inca, where he got all the experience to win the 2014 Dakar in quads.

The champion of the quad category in the 2014 Dakar, Ignacio Casale, is a versatile driver.  In 2013 he participated in the rally race of the Chilean championship. And a few weeks ago, he won the Desafío del Desierto in the bike category in the North of Chile. He is happy with everything he does on wheels. He is now training to take part in the Desafío Inca in Perú (11th-14th September) riding a quad, a bike and a bicycle, on top of his physical preparation at the gym.

Before winning the 2014 Dakar, Casale had won the Desafío Inca, which encouraged and guided him to get the biggest success in his sporting career. “Running in the Desafíos is very important to all the drivers, because it is truly there where you start consolidating the idea of what a Dakar may be. Last year I won the Desafío Inca, which gave me confidence to win the 2014 Dakar.”

Precisely, in the 2013 Peruvian competition Ignacio Casale learned what he needed to get a better result in the Dakar, especially as far as how to face the dunes, navigation, how to interact with the navigation and safety devices, to know his machine and about the organization of the race.

“Undoubtedly the Desafío taught me about many situations you go through on a daily basis in a Dakar, which allowed me to get the first place. When the race started in Rosario, I already felt confident. Ultimately, the Desafíos are learning experiences for the Dakar”, the Chilean driver said.

Olivier Pain: One of the conditions for aiming the victory


Announcing its programme of preparation for the Dakar 2015, the Yamaha Factory Racing team has confirmed an extension to Olivier Pain’s contract. The French rider was 3rd in the last edition, and he will work with team-mate Michael Metge (13th) throughout the year. Now the leader of the Japanese team, Olivier is starting his season in Sardinia and expects to get up to speed in two Dakar Series events that he has already marked on his calendar: the Desafio Guarani in July (20-24th) and the Desafio Inca in September (11-14th).

Olivier Pain, after reaching the podium in the Dakar last January, you have decided on a preparation strategy aimed at winning the event that is completely different…

I’ve decided to stay with Yamaha to maintain some stability, working with people I know and equipment that suits me fine. Above all, I’m going to have a real season of preparation with four races before the Dakar, whereas before I turned up with just one behind me. I’ve been competing for a while now, but it will still be a boost to have all those miles behind me. It’s one of the conditions for having a shot at the title in the Dakar.

Within your strategy, how will your participation in the Desafio Guarani help?

It will be a great opportunity to fine tune all the settings, and to get the whole team working as a unit. I don’t know whether I’ll be able to win it, because I need to be very careful too, and I need to hit peak form in January. Anyway, it will help us to develop the bike, and I’m also very keen to discover Paraguay. I visit new countries every year thanks to the Dakar, and I’m always open-minded because it is about exploring other territories and experiencing other cultures.

Your participation in the Desafio Inca will also be an important part of your preparation…

Of course, because it is essential to ride the dunes at some time of the year. I remember Peru in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Dakar; those stages across the sand were very demanding. If I can be competitive on that kind of terrain from September onwards, I know that will help to keep those sensations fresh in my mind when I compete again four months later.



The reconnaissance put the last touches to the road book of the upcoming Desafío Inca (September 11–14, 2014), with a course celebrating rally raids, Peruvian style. The long strings of dunes of the Ica Desert will be a decisive test for drivers and riders in the run-up to the 2015 Dakar.

The Peruvian desert has built itself a certain reputation among those who took part in the 2012 and 2013 Dakars, as well as the inaugural edition of the Desafío Inca. Its stature will continue to grow and gain respect in the second edition, which will once again put motorcycle riders and car drivers’ dune-crossing skills to the test. Having checked out the courses of the three loop stages on the race programme, sports manager Juan Valdivia confirmed that the Peruvian leg of the Dakar Series will pack more sand than any other: “Peru’s endless dunes allow us to revamp the route of the Desafío Inca and set the drivers and riders who come here in September a real challenge. Of course, we’ll take them to the famous giant dunes in Ica, where navigational mistakes can cost them lots of time before they find their bearings again. They will need to put all their technical skills and tricks to work to surf the fofas, an especially fine and light type of sand which tends to give way under their wheels.”

The reconnaissance team has kept the loop geometry of the stages, but it has also introduced more varied terrains than in the 2013 edition. Competitors will therefore have to prove their worth to tackle the ríos and other surprises on the programme. Once reconnaissance was complete, the route details were sent to agents from the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of the Environment attended the reconnaissance so they can protect high-value archaeological and natural sites.



The second edition of the Desafío Inca is an event with multiple challenges, right from the first event.

It will be the last date of the 2014 Dakar Series season and will give rise to a wild battle before the crowning of the prize-winners.

It will be the last opportunity of the year to grab a Dakar Challenge 2014 Wild Card, which will enable the three most deserving amateurs (a motorbike driver, a quad-driver and a car crew) to win free registration for the Dakar 2015.

Here is a reminder of the registration conditions for the Dakar Challenge:
- never having taken part in the Dakar Rally;
- never having finished within the top ten in a FIM off-road (motorbike and/or quad) rally;
- not being included on the FIA priority driver lists (cars).
At the end of the race, the driver with the best general ranking in the motorbike, quad and car category will win a registration for the 2015 Dakar Rally.

Marco Bulacia winner of the Dakar Series on Car category


The bolivian pilot Marco Bulacia becomes the winner of the Dakar Series on the car category after the three stages run on the big dunes of the Ica desert. He obtains its win after competing on the Desafío Ruta 40 which took place in Argentina last june and the Desafio Inca which took end yesterday in Peru. Marco proudly hosted the bolivian banner in Peru and win his first crown on gthe Dakar Series.

The Peruvian world-class event reached its climax today, with the best pilot in each of the three categories taking the overall victory at the end of the final stage. Guilherme Spinelli (cars), Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles) and Ignacio Casale (quads) are the champions of the 2013 Desafío Inca, which also crowned the winners of the Dakar Series and the Dakar Challenge.


Coming to Peru as the favourite was the best stimulus for Brazil’s Guilherme Spinelli (Mitsubishi ASX Racing), who consolidated his lead in style in today’s stage. It took the champion 11 h 29′40″ to complete the three gruelling stages. The Alta Ruta 4×4 team (+1 h 52′38″) and Diego Weber (+2 h 10′05″) snapped up the other two podium places.

Spinelli’s virtuoso performance meant he was the only driver or rider to win all the specials and stages of the Desafío Inca: the perfect reward for the hard work of the Brazilian Mitsubishi Petrobras team.


His ability to set a blistering pace throughout the three-stage race helped Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla (KTM 450 Rally Réplica) defend his lead and win the overall classification. His cumulative time of 11 h 56′05″ was enough for him to win the fierce battle against David Casteu (+9′29″), who clawed back some time but was unable to close the gap. Peru’s Eduardo “Tato” Heinrich came in third, 31′14″ down on the winner.

Pablo Quintanilla surprised everyone from the first stage. He moved into the overall lead and that is where he stayed until the end of the event, showing just how much preparation went into his KTM. Following Cyril Despres’ withdrawal due to a mechanical in yesterday’s stage, Quintanilla withstood Casteu’s onslaught and went on to become the new champion.


Chile’s Ignacio Casale (Yamaha Raptor 700) extended his run of strong performances in Peru to wrap up his victory in the Quads category at the end of the third stage. With a time of 12 h 54′37″, there was clear daylight between Casale and Ignacio Flores (+26′15″), his rival in the last two stages. Argentina’s Sebastián Halpern (+1 h 31′41″) took the bottom step of the podium. This is Casale’s first international win.

The Chilean rider took all the specials in the race apart from the second stage. A fantastic performance in the land of the Incas, where he tamed the awe-inspiring dunes of Ica beneath an unforgiving sun which pushed the riders to the limit.


Frenchmen David Casteu (Yamaha YZF 450) was crowned winner of the Dakar Series after finishing the Desafío Inca in second place. Casteu, who was in the thick of the action in Ica, also became the top-ranked rider of this season after riding strongly to fifth place in Argentina’s Desafío Ruta 40. He already won the inaugural edition of the Dakar Series, held in Hungary and Romania in April 2008.


Up-and-coming Chileans Cristian Naser Colombo (motorcycles) and Víctor Gallegos (quads) passed the three stages of the 2013 Desafío Inca in Peru with flying colours. Álvaro Silva and his navigator Ernesto Castro win the challenge on the car category and will represent Peru in January. This result earned them the much coveted free tickets to the 2014 Dakar Rally.


Guilherme Spinelli (cars): “It’s a very special day for me because it’s the first race we win outside Brazil. I’m very happy because we have a highly competitive car.”

Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles): “I came here to get some experience, and this victory’s put me on cloud nine. I rode smartly, without making any mistakes. It’s a privilege for me.”

Ignacio Casale (quads): “I’m delighted with this great result. I won my first international rally. This shows I’ve been training well, I’m happy.”

The second stage of the Desafío Inca took place on an excellent day in Ica, which was marked by the surprise withdrawal of Cyril Despres. David Casteu (motorcycles) and Ignacio Flores (quads) won the stage, while Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles) and Ignacio Casale (quads) defended their lead in the general classification. Brazil’s Guilherme Spinelli put on a fantastic show to grab the stage and extend his overall lead.


Brazil’s Guilherme Spinelli (Mitsubishi ASX Racing) gave no respite to his rivals. He stamped his authority once again, taking his second straight victory at the Desafío Inca after prevailing in the first and only special the cars had to tackle today. At 3 h 33′17″, Spinelli was over half an hour faster than Diego Weber, his closest pursuer in the stage.

With a cumulative time of 8 h 11′01″, the Brazilian driver now enjoys a margin of 1 h 08′46″ over the Peruvian Alta Ruta 4×4 team. This lead will take give Guilherme some breathing room ahead of the last stage, in which he will seek to deliver the knockout blow.


Sparks flew in the Motorcycles category, with Frenchman David Casteu (Yamaha YZF 450) coming from behind to win the second stage with a time of 5 h 03′28″. His outstanding ride catapulted him ahead of Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla (+4′03″) and Claudio Rodríguez (+15′13″). Nevertheless, Quintanilla (KTM 450 Rally Réplica) also produced a solid performance and remained in the overall lead at the end of the day.

Pablo’s provisional first place is a testament to his consistency in the two stages so far. Fellow Chilean Daniel Gouet also stepped into the spotlight by taking the first section of the day and, all in all, putting on a great show in Ica. Quintanilla now leads the general classification with a time of 8 h 51′30″, ahead of today’s winner David Casteu (+7′29″) and Claudio Rodríguez (+23′31″).

Frenchman Cyril Despres had to quit the race after running into trouble during the second stage. He had been riding strongly when his motorcycle stopped with 20 km to go. Despres said after the stage that he still had not identified the mechanical problem. “We still don’t know what happened. It was a great rally —what a pity. I hope to be able to continue tomorrow, I very rarely quit rallies”, he pointed out.


Peru’s Ignacio Flores (Yamaha Raptor 700R) took his first stage today after fighting his way into the top 3 in the opener. With a time of 5 h 29′26″, Ignacio’s win was the first for the local lads in the Desafío Inca. Chile’s Ignacio Casale (+2′42″) came in second, followed by Argentina’s Lucas Bonetto (+32′55″) in third place. The Peruvian rider jumped to second overall, right behind Casale, who has a cumulative time of 9 h 34′34″.

The Chilean rider knows this could be enough to hand him the win after tomorrow’s stage and will fight to defend his 25′10″ lead over Flores. If he stays strong, tomorrow could be Ignacio Casale’s big day.


Guilherme Spinelli (cars):”A great stage which pushed us to the limit and put our technical skills to the test. The car performed faultlessly. We’re ready for the last day.”

Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles): “A difficult but positive day. I was a bit nervous because I had to open the course, but I focused and now I’m happy to be in the overall lead.”

Ignacio Flores (quads): “Things turned out great in the first loop because I was eager to catch the first rider. A nice, long special, an awesome day, we’re elated.”

Ignacio Casale (quads): “It was a terrific stage. I’m delighted to continue in the overall lead. Time to be extra careful with the bike now, as any mistake could cost us dearly.”

The Desafío Inca kicks off with a great show in Ica


The Desafío Inca started with a bang today, as the drivers and riders tackled two specials totalling 308 kilometres on the breathtaking dunes of Ica. Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles), Ignacio Casale (quads) and Guilherme Spinelli (autos) were the big winners of the stage.


The motorcycle category, one of most anticipated, saw Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla (KTM 450 Rally Réplica) draw first blood in the inaugural stage of the Desafío Inca. With a time of 3 h 43′59″, the southern motocross specialist prevailed in both of today’s specials, followed by Bolivia’s Juan Carlos Salvatierra (+4′53″) and local boy Eduardo “Tato” Heinrich (+7′58″).

Quintanilla surprised everyone in a positive way when he topped the ranking at the end of the gruelling first circuit, leaving Heinrich and Salvatierra to fight for second place, with the Bolivian rider gaining the upper hand. Cyril Despres and David Casteu managed to climb a few places at the end of the stage, finishing sixth and fourth, respectively.


Chile’s Ignacio Casale (Yamaha Raptor 700) opened the largest gap of the day after setting a blistering pace from the get-go. His finishing time of 4 h 02′26″ put him no less than 25 minutes ahead of his closest opponent, Sebastián Halpern, with Peru’s Ignacio Flores in third.

Casale’s commanding lead at the end of the first special allowed him to relax during the second loop. Daniel Mazzuco and Lucas Bonetto managed to get into the top 5, but they will have their work cut out for them if they want to claw back some time in tomorrow’s stage.


The Brazilian driver came to Paracas as one of the favourites to win the race and today he confirmed that status. Guilherme Spinelli (Mitsubishi ASX Racing) posted a finishing time of 4 h 37′44″, enough to propel him to the overall lead in the car classification with a 14′51″ margin over the Peruvian Alta Ruta 4×4 team, consisting of Francisco León and Tomás Hiraoka.

Spinelli also stamped his authority on today’s two specials, in the race that marks the dawn of the Dakar Series’ Peruvian adventure. Guilherme was able to double the lead he had opened up in the first loop, giving him some breathing space ahead of the second stage. The Brazilian team look poised to continue their great race.


Pablo Quintanilla (motorcycles):”It was a great stage. We had to be constantly on the lookout because dunes require a great focus, but I was totally relaxed. I’m happy I made it to the end. I’m in tip-top shape and the bike didn’t miss a beat.”

Ignacio Casale (quads): “It was a nice stage. I was the first to start, so I put the pedal to the metal thinking they were right on my heels. I went really fast, which is why I got a big gap. I must say I was quite inspired. There are still two days to go and I must treat the quad well.”

Guilherme Spinelli (cars): “We hadn’t raced on dunes since April, and it’s quite satisfying to win a stage on this terrain. We’re delighted, our navigation was perfect.”

Cyril Despres (motorcycles): “I had to open the course and navigate, which made it easier for others to follow me. I had some trouble with fog at the beginning. I couldn’t see a thing, but tomorrow’s another day. My bike went well.”

Drivers and riders ready to rumble as 83 vehicles are cleared for the symbolic start of the Desafío Inca after scrutineering


With the technical and administrative checks behind them, the drivers and riders will flock to Paracas’ El Chaco Boulevard for the symbolic start (5 pm local time). Everything is ready for the show to get on the road.

PARACAS, Peru, October 3, 2013.– Ica will set the stage for a fierce battle throughout the three stages of the Desafío Inca, as the top drivers and riders fight to dominate their categories. With over 1,000 kilometres of racing entirely on dunes, the maiden edition of the Dakar Series in Peru will be anything but a walk in the park for the competitors.


There is a reason why those who signed up for the Desafío Inca started their preparation several months before they even set foot in Paracas: the tough safety and technical requirements set at the various checks they faced today.

Drivers, riders, navigators and mechanics must work hard on their two- and four-wheeled machines well in advance to avoid being caught offside. Seemingly small things like a vehicle with papers that are not up-to-date or an expired driving or sporting licence can dash the hopes of the competitors and knock them out of the race before they have covered a single inch. In the end, 37 motorcycles, 26 quads and 20 cars were cleared to start tomorrow.


Cyril Despres stands out as the favourite in the motorcycle category. Yamaha’s new recruit, a five-time Dakar winner and the defending champion in the biggest motor sports event in the world, will have to see off an international field of well-known riders, including David Casteu, José Manuel Pellicer, Daniel Gouet and the Prohens brothers (Felipe and Jaime), as well as Felipe Ríos, who will fly the flag for Peru.

The quad category will see a clash of titans between Chile’s Ignacio Casale and Argentina’s Lucas Bonetto. Both of them have already showcased their full potential in racing conditions, with the latter triumphing in style at the Desafío Ruta 40. Daniel Mazzuco, winner of the same Argentinean event in the 4×4 category back in June, will also be on the start line in Peru. Sebastián Halpern, Sergio La Fuente and Ignacio Flores will be looking for the slightest chink in their armour.

The car category, one of those which have raised the most expectation, is sure to feature lots of action. Brazil’s Guilherme Spinelli will start as the big favourite following his performances in the 2010 and 2011 Dakars. He will come up against a host of Peruvian riders, who have signed up for this event en masse with Ramón Ferreyros at their helm. Two of the best national teams, Alta Ruta 4×4 and Duro 4×4, will join the Bolivian, Chilean and Colombian contingents.

After the Desafío Ruta 40 in Argentina, the Dakar Series will have tasted Peruvian soil by the end of the Desafío Inca, in which 17 drivers and riders will vie for the top honours in the motorcycle (15) and car (2) categories. Motorcycle rider David Casteu will be on the hunt for a win to crown his great performance, but rivals such as Daniel Gouet, the Prohens brothers, Juan Carlos Salvatierra and Pablo Quintanilla will certainly not go down without a fight. The car category is a Bolivian affair in which Marco Bulacia and Luis Barbery will fight to finish first in Ica.

Last but not least, the Dakar Challenge will also be a clear objective for rookies aiming to take home one of the free spots on offer for the 2014 Dakar Rally and amass as much experience as possible. Everything is ready for the commencement of hostilities in the car (7), motorcycle (12) and quad (13) categories. Miguel Bulacia and Peru’s Roberto Pardo will be on the business end of things in the car category, while one of the many local riders is expected to win in the motorcycle category, and Fernando Loli-Arnao, Víctor Gallegos and José Salaverry are among the big names in the quad category.


Cyril Despres: “I’m happy to be back in Peru. Yamaha’s made things much easier for us and this has helped us. The Dakar’s given me a lot, but I must continue to perform at a high level if I’m to win. I won the last two times I came here, it’s always worked out great for me.”

Guilherme Spinelli: “I’m delighted to be here, in a country which gave us an amazing welcome. Brazil doesn’t have any deserts like this one, so it’ll be a good opportunity to test the car. Cars are faster on dunes, so we’ll see.”

Ignacio Casale: “I’m all fired up because this will be my first Dakar Series. Many talented countrymen of mine will be here. We’ll fight for the podium. I’ve prepared very well and we’re looking forward to a decent challenge. We’ve got to be careful and have fun.”

Ramón Ferreyros: “For Peruvian motor sports, it’s important to have a Dakar Series event in Peru. Racing here gives us lots of experience. This is my second start in the desert and we’ve got a car that performs very well on dunes.”

Felipe Ríos: “Hosting the Desafío Inca in Peru is terrific. It’s an international benchmark for all Peruvian drivers and riders. I’m sure the course will be tough, but we’ll be out to have fun and do well in the race.”

Ignacio Flores: “Hats off to the organisers for thinking of Peru. Peruvians are eager to practise the sport, as shown by the 12 quads on the start line. It’s a great leap forward.”

Revving up: the world of motor sports turns its eyes towards Peru for the 2013 Desafío Inca


The time has come. The first foray of the Dakar Series into Peru began today in Paracas with the scrutineering and the symbolic start. About 90 crews will face 3 days, 3 stages, 6 specials and a course over 1,000 km long on Ica’s imposing dunes in their quest to take the top honours.

After several weeks of waiting, today is D-Day for the 2013 Desafío Inca. The maiden edition of a Dakar Series event in Peru started on a high in Paracas, where the technical and administrative checks have been underway since the early hours. The race will officially kick off later this evening, at 5 pm local time, with the symbolic start on El Chaco Boulevard.

With the formalities out of the way, the event will feature three stages in as many days of racing entirely within Peru, from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6. Sand here, sand there, sand everywhere awaits the competitors on the jaw-dropping deserts around Ica. The 1,000 km course will feature link sections. Competitors will get the opportunity to shine in no fewer than 6 specials (5 in the car category). Those who suffer a mishap will be allowed to continue the race following application of the corresponding penalties. The Desafío Inca is all about letting competitors show their full potential.

Almost 90 vehicles representing 14 nationalities will be vying for glory and a place on the final podium. All in all, 39 motorcycles, 28 quads and 22 cars will try to finish the Desafío Inca. The drivers and riders will have to tackle the courses twice every day (except for the cars on day 2) to finish the stages. With 90 accredited journalists and 131 countries ready to broadcast this big event, the ample media coverage will help the Dakar Series keep both domestic and global audiences on the edge of their seats.

After a link section, the opener of the Desafío Inca will kick off tomorrow, with the first motorcycle and quad hitting the road at 8 am local time, followed by the first car 47 minutes later. The stage will consist of two 154 km timed specials divided into two loops, as well as a 169 km link section at the end, for a total of 477 km.

The second stage will take place on Saturday, October 5, and see the first motorcycle off at 7:35 am local time, with the first car scheduled to start at 8:22 am. This stage will be different from the other two in that the cars will only face the first loop, with a 250 km timed special which will also be tackled by the motorcycles and quads. The latter two will then make their way to the second loop for a 183 km timed special. Counting the timed specials and link sections, motorcycles and quads will have covered no less than 515 km at the end of the day, compared with the cars’ 314 km.

The finale on Sunday, October 6, will feature the same course for all categories. Two 140 km specials will decide the winner of the Desafío Inca in each category at the end of a 362 km stage. Then, the drivers and racers will head for El Chaco Boulevard for the podium ceremony, scheduled for 6:30 pm local time. Everything is ready for the race to start. Peru is already living the 2013 Desafío Inca experience.



The closure of registrations is nearing for the Desafio Inca, which already boasts 84 vehicles at the start. The last race numbers will be assigned on 20th September!

Attracted by the dunes of the Pisco region, which the Dakar already visited in 2012 and 2013, many riders and drivers have seized the opportunity to come and test their mettle in a highly competitive environment, with a view to the 2014 edition that will start on 5th January next year in Rosario (Argentina). In total, 38 bikes, 26 quads and 18 cars have already been registered as starters. The competitors for the title up for grabs in each category will find themselves in competitions running in parallel on the Desafio Inca. As a result, the 17 riders and drivers who took part in the Desafio Ruta 40 last June in Argentina will be battling it out for the title of Dakar Series champion. Furthermore, 33 competitors will also be intending to put in a good display on the Dakar Challenge, whose winners will be invited to participate in the Dakar 2014.

Spinelli in position


Guilherme Spinelli is continuing his quest for excellence by signing up for the Desafio Inca. The Brazilian driver intends to prove he is one of the forces to be reckoned with on the South American continent before the next Dakar.

He is already one of the leading drivers. Guilherme Spinelli, dominating a nevertheless stiff level of competition on the national stage, has won four times the Rally Dos Sertoes, the flagship race of the Brazilian all-terrain circuit. What’s more, since his first participation on the Dakar, he finished the race in the Top 10 in 2010 (10th) and 2011 (9th) and fully intends to continue progressing this year. Despite dropping out two years running, the Mitsubishi Petrobras team has unswerving trust in his abilities and have continued to develop the ASX 4×4 that “Guiga” tried out for the first time on the last Dakar. In order to arrive at the next edition with the best chances of rubbing shoulders with the Top 5, the Spinelli-Haddad duo have chosen to fine-tune their preparation on the Desafio Inca, from 3rd to 6th October. The three days of competition will give them the opportunity to confirm the performance level they displayed in August on the Rally Dos Sertoes, where they were only beaten by Stéphane Peterhansel. “It will be the desert in its purest state,” says a thrilled Spinelli, “with dunes of all sizes and very soft sand. It’s an event on which we can both improve how the team works and develop the car”. In a roundabout way, his co-pilot Youssef Haddad sets out the striking ambitions held by the team for next month in Peru: “Excellence is something that comes with repetition. The more we drive together, the better our performance will be”.

Desafío Inca: “A sea of sand”


Preparations are underway for the first edition of the Dakar Series Desafío Inca, which will be taking place later this year in Peru from 4 to 6 October. Recent reconnaissance expeditions have meant that the roadbook for the three stages in the competition programme is now complete. As expected, the real challenge will consist of crossing dunes and racing on sand.

There are just over two months to go before the start of the Desafío Inca. Peruvian competitors have been notified of the date and will be hosting both the all-terrain continental elite and some of the stars of the main rally-raid teams. After a new series of recons, the scene is already set for a breathtaking spectacle which will satisfy viewers awaiting great images as well as drivers keen to perfect their techniques, especially on the very demanding terrain of the Ica desert. “What is special about this rally is that the course is shaped like a trefoil,”explains Juan Valdivia, the race’s sporting director. “We can safely say that competitors will be plunged into a veritable sea of sand, with dunes in all colours and shapes. The heat is expected to play an important role in these three stages; it should inspire cautionso as to protect both the competitors and their machines.”

For this first edition of the Desafío Inca, which uncovers in detail the territories that have already been partially visited during the last two editions of the Dakar, the definition of the route and recon journeys have been carried out with the greatest of care when it came to skirting around protected areas. Juan Valdivia resorted to tried and tested methods, saying that “all of the stages of preparing for the course have been approved by the Ministry for Culture and the Environment on the one hand, as well as by the National Police of Peru for all security matters on the other.”

Dakar Series: “Chaleco” as a title contender


More than 50 vehicles have already been signed up for the first edition of the Desafío Inca, being held from 4 to 6 October in the region of Pisco (Peru). Among the favourites in the motorcycle race, Francisco López is poised as one of the most serious contenders for the title of “Dakar Series Champion 2013”.

Inevitably, the names of certain regions of the world conjure up memories. For Dakar riders, the experiences shared in Peru and around Pisco in particular certainly set the bar high. And the very best in the field have opted to return in autumn to enjoy some big thrills while preparing for the 2014 edition of the Dakar.

According to Cyril Despres and David Casteu, who announced their participation in the Desafío Inca several weeks ago, Chaleco López, 2nd in the final classification at the finish line in Santiago last January, has also just sent his entry file to the organisers. “In sporting terms, I am sure that there will be a huge advantage when it comes to preparing for the Dakar,” said the Chilean rider, who also views it as an opportunity to play a part in the discipline’s development on the continent. “It is tremendously positive to see that it is possible to organise races of this calibre in the region.

For riders in neighbouring countries, these are opportunities not to be missed, which only require an affordable budget and which guarantee both difficult terrain and top quality competitors.” This is an aspect which is certain to be of interest to the brand new official KTM rider during the three days of the competition. In fact, “Chaleco” finished 2nd in the DesafíoRuta 40 in June which places him at the top of the cumulated classification for deciding the title of “Dakar Series Champion 2013”. Moreover, his teammate Kurt Caselli, winner in Argentina, will not compete in Peru. On the other hand, López will have to battle it out with David Casteu, 5th in the DesafíoRuta 40 and only fifteen minutes behind his rival.

Aside from the chronometric advantage, “Chaleco” could also draw upon his feats from the Dakar: he won two of the three Peruvian stages he took part in during the 2013 Dakar!

A Desafío Stand in Expo Moto 2013


The 2013 edition of Expo Moto openedlast Friday 12th of July and welcomed during three days all enthusiasts for motorsports in the Jockey Club Exhibition Centre in Lima.

The Desafío Inca was involved on this fair with its own stand.
The Peruvian riders who had already participated on the Dakar and those who will enter this new challenge in October were present signing autographs for all the audienceand presenting their 2013 season’s projects with the Dakar 2014 as ultimate objective.

Etienne Lavigne: “The Dakar Series will be a new adventure for Peru”


The Peruvian Government supports any initiative involving cars and connected with tourism that will open the doors for new investments.

Desafío Inca” (the Inca Challenge) will be held between 4 and 6 October, with a route covering one thousand kilometres of majestic dunes in the Ica desert, in a new challenge for the drivers and leading Peruvian and international teams who will be tackling the Dakar Series car rally, which will take place in this country for the first time.

“The Dakar Series will be a new adventure for Peru. It is not a small-scale Dakar and is quite a different trademark from Dakar. We want to provide this continent with a rally that has all the trappings of top class international status, is well organised, well attended by drivers, with full security cover and attractive for the media”, explained Dakar director Etienne Lavigne, while visiting Lima to supervise the progress being made in organising the event.

The “Desafío Inca” will take place on 4, 5 and 6 October. “These three days will be spent near Pisco, where the route will cover a total of 1,000 kilometres that will require the participants to give the best of themselves. It is certainly a difficult rally and a great opportunity for drivers in the area, from both Peru and its neighbours, to be able to compete in a spectacular terrain that is still talked about by those who have competed in the Dakar in the last two years, both in 2012 when it finished in Lima and this year, when it started here on the shores of the Pacific Ocean”, he commented.

The Dakar Series is made up of different competitions that must be carried out in different parts of Europe and America. The 2013 edition will start off this Sunday in Jujuy (Argentina). The rally, which has been given the name of Desafío Ruta 40, will continue until Saturday 22 of this month with around a hundred drivers competing. A similar number is expected to form part of the new ‘Dakar-type’ adventure on Peruvian soil. A national driver, Alexis Hernández, already knows what it is to win a Dakar Series. He won in the quad category of the Dakar Challenge 2012 event that was held in Argentina.

It is impossible to avoid mentioning topics such as the Dakar 2014 route which will pass through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. “The decision not to pass through Peru next year is not due to the Government being unable to negotiate properly. The opposite is, in fact, true, as right from the start the Peruvian authorities have always, and still do, shown great willingness to work and cooperate with us. Our work philosophy has always been the same. It is a work philosophy for us, for Dakar’s owner A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation), to write a new reality for the Dakar every year. We cannot set off from or arrive back at the same city in all the editions, and it is in the interests of the competition for us not to do this. So, if we want to achieve a high degree of attention from the public and competitors alike, every year we need to surprise everyone with a new phase, a new destination, a new route. And that is precisely what we are doing for 2014. This does not mean that we are not thinking of returning to Peru in a forthcoming edition”, Lavigne explained.

A meeting was held last night between A.S.O., representatives of the Peruvian Government and a group of Peruvian competitors in the 2013 edition of the Dakar Rally. During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, José Luis Silva, reiterated that they have a very good relationship with the French authorities. “The Government is working on the development of car and motorcycle racing. What we want is for the sporting side and the tourism side to generate a significant synergy”, he said. He also pointed out that they will support the internationalization of competitions such as Caminos del Inca.

A bib for Despres


At the time of the announcement of his signing with Yamaha, Cyril Despres had also finalised his racing programme for the 2013 season. His preparation for the Dakar will be at the Desafio Inca.

Cyril Despres gets right to the point with his implacable logic. This meticulous and focussed five times winner plans to spend the year developing the Yamaha with which he hopes to match Stéphane Peterhansel’s record in the motorbike category. To conclude this preparation cycle, he chose Desafio Inca for reasons that seem natural to him: “Since the Dakar is now taking place in South America, I think it is quite logical to accumulate competition mileage on terrain similar to what we will encounter in a few months time. I know we’re not going to Peru this year, but I especially remember that we did some really special off-road there, and that is what is most difficult in our discipline. It’s very hard to find places where you can work at the off-road navigation. If we go to North Africa or other regions for training or competitions, we often find ourselves on the same sites, but Peru allows us to truly confront the great outdoors.”

First steps


This coming 4, 5 and 6 October, the Desafío Inca offers high level competition, known as the Dakar Series, designed to confront drivers and crews with the Peruvian desert, before tackling the Dakar. Registrations are now open.

Everyone has his method, direction and motivation. But careful preparation for the Dakar through an intermediate competition permits competitors to assess their level more accurately, to conduct tests on the vehicles, make adjustments and gain in confidence. For its first edition, this is precisely what the Desafío Inca offers. South American and indeed European drivers can now register for the challenge of the Peruvian desert, which was part of the Dakar 2012 and 2013 route.

Based in Paracas, Desafío Inca offers ideal conditions for amateur drivers anxious to confront the most demanding dunes. The three stages of the programme, each designed to cover two identical loops in the day, will allow for the intervention of assistance teams, facilitated by minimal link distances.

The Pisco spirit!



On 4, 5 and 6 October this year, Peru will welcome the Dakar Rally drivers, who are busy preparing for the Dakar Rally, for the first Desafío Inca event. The route for this Dakar Series event runs around Pisco, on the sand dunes and tracks that had impressed the Dakar 2012 and 2013 drivers.

Peru, land of rallies

During its last two series, the Dakar Rally discovered areas in Peru that were particularly well suited to off-road rallies. In 2012, as in 2013, the Peruvian leg turned out to be a selective and decisive event, both for the best drivers in the world, and for amateurs who were discovering the sport. Among those who took part, many Peruvians were able to demonstrate the extent of their enthusiasm, beginning with Ignacio Flores, the quad-rider, who won the first stage last January. At the time, this specific feat had been achieved in Pisco, at the centre of the desert area in the Ica Region. This area, which has a particular kind of sandbars and sandy valleys, has been chosen as the setting for the first Desafío Inca series.

A typical Dakar triple event

The 25 vehicles registered under the Forza Inca flag in the Dakar 2013 now form a hard core on the Peruvian off-road circuit. These pioneering ambassadors have become a source of inspiration for their countrymen. In fact, they are preparing to welcome drivers from the rest of Latin America to their region, as well as a few European team leaders, who will come to fine tune their skills ahead of the 2014 event. With over 1,000 km to cover in a special event, the Desafío Inca is both a quality test and a strategic intermediate stage three months before the main meeting.

A title there for the winning

The Desafío Inca is an ideal preparation race with multiple challenges. Budding talents will have an opportunity to stand out in the Dakar Challenge, where the winners will be rewarded by registration for the Dakar 2014. In addition, the Dakar Series label has been awarded to two Latin American events this year. Following the Desafío Ruta 40, which is organised in Argentina in June, competitors who go on to the Desafío Inca will then be entered into aggregate rankings. The final winner will then be declared the 2013 Dakar Series Champion.
